The 5 best winter boots for 2026: proven models compared
Nesim Yılmaz · 21.10.2026
There are hundreds of winter boots, but only a handful of models that people buy year after year – because they work. Here are five of them, each for a different kind of winter: from deep snow to a wet, slushy British January.
A note first: we haven't lab-tested these boots. Our picks are based on manufacturer information, construction and the criteria in our winter boots guide. Temperature ratings from brands are rough guides for when you're moving – standing still, you'll feel the cold sooner.

1. Sorel Caribou – the classic for properly cold days
The Caribou has been the archetypal snow boot for decades: a waterproof rubber shell below, leather above and a removable felt liner inside. It's rated by the brand for very low temperatures. You can take the liner out in the evening to dry – a real advantage if you're in the snow every day.
Strengths: very warm, fully sealed against snow, replaceable liner.
Weaknesses: heavy and bulky; overkill for long walks around town.
Sizing: Tends to run large; with thick socks your usual size usually fits.
2. Columbia Bugaboot – a lighter snow boot with good grip
The Bugaboot is the sportier option: much lighter than the Caribou, with a reflective thermal lining and a grippy lugged sole. It's a good pick if you walk a lot in winter – snowy dog walks, sledging, days out.
Strengths: light for a snow boot, good tread, often cheaper than rivals.
Weaknesses: not as warm as the Caribou when standing still in deep cold.
Sizing: True to size.
3. Timberland 6-Inch Premium – the all-rounder for town
The "yellow boot" isn't a snow boot but a waterproof leather boot with light insulation. For a typical UK winter – rain, slush, temperatures around freezing – it's often more practical than a heavy snow boot, and it works with jeans in the office too.
Strengths: waterproof, tough, easy to wear every day, lasts for years.
Weaknesses: stiff for the first few weeks; not warm enough for real cold.
Sizing: Runs large; many people go half a size down.
4. UGG Classic Mini – comfort for dry, cold days
Sheepskin inside, suede outside: the Classic Mini is extremely comfortable and warm as long as it stays dry. It isn't made for slush and road salt – suede soaks up water and the sole is slippery on ice.
Strengths: very warm and soft, light, quick to slip on.
Weaknesses: not waterproof, little support, sensitive to salt.
Sizing: Worn without socks; the sheepskin gives, so buy snug.
5. Lowa Renegade GTX Mid – for winter walkers
The Renegade is really a walking boot – but with a Gore-Tex membrane and a grippy sole it's one of the best companions for active winter days on muddy trails. It isn't insulated: with warm wool socks and on the move that's usually enough; for standing around in the snow it's too cool.
Strengths: great support, waterproof, excellent sole, usable all year.
Weaknesses: no insulation, pricier than dedicated winter boots.
Sizing: True to size; half a size up for thick socks.

When are winter boots cheapest?
Prices usually fall from late January when the season ends – but common sizes are often gone by then. Black Friday is frequently a good balance of price and size choice. See our shoe sale calendar, and set up a price alert so we can email you when a winter boot in your size gets genuinely cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
Which winter boot is the warmest?
Of these five, the Sorel Caribou is the warmest thanks to its felt liner and thick sole. How you wear it matters too: dry socks and room for your toes make more difference than a few degrees on a label.
Are UGG boots good in snow?
Only up to a point. The sheepskin keeps you warm, but suede isn't waterproof and the sole has little grip. They're comfortable in dry cold; for slush and ice there are better boots.
Can I wear walking boots in winter?
Yes, if they're waterproof and have a good tread. Most aren't insulated, so wear warm wool socks – they suit walking better than standing still.
Should I buy winter boots a size up?
Not automatically. Allow for thicker socks and try them on in the evening when your feet are slightly bigger. Some models run large anyway – see the sizing notes above.
