Gift guide: the best warm slippers (and winter boots)
Nesim Yılmaz · 21.10.2026
Slippers are one of the few presents that almost always get used – every evening, all winter. To make sure they aren't flat after three weeks, it's worth looking at a few proven models in felted wool or sheepskin. Here are six, from an affordable felt mule to a sheepskin classic.
As always: we haven't lab-tested these slippers. Our picks are based on manufacturer information, materials and construction. You'll see prices and colours on the product page.

1. Birkenstock Zermatt – a slipper with a footbed
The Zermatt is a felt mule with Birkenstock's familiar cork footbed. It's the right gift for anyone who prefers support underfoot to a soft, flat sole. Shearling-lined versions are even warmer.
Good for: people who spend a lot of time on their feet at home.
Note: the footbed feels firmer than a typical slipper at first.
2. Giesswein Veitsch – the wool classic
Giesswein makes boiled-wool slippers in the Austrian Tyrol. The Veitsch is its classic model: warm, breathable and light. Wool regulates temperature well, so feet don't get sweaty as quickly over a long evening.
Good for: anyone after a timeless slipper.
Note: the sole is designed for indoor use.
3. Haflinger Grizzly Kanon – the felt clog
A felt clog with a thick footbed, a familiar sight in German homes. The closed toe keeps feet warm, the open heel makes it quick to slip on and off.
Good for: cold tiled or stone floors.
Note: clogs sit looser than closed slippers.
4. glerups Wool Shoe – simple and closed
Danish glerups are made of felted wool with a leather sole (rubber on some versions). The closed shoe wraps the whole foot – ideal for draughty older houses.
Good for: anyone who likes things minimal and properly warm.
Note: leather soles can be slippery on smooth floors – choose the rubber sole if that's a concern.
5. UGG Scuff – sheepskin to slip into
Sheepskin inside, suede outside: the Scuff (the similar women's model is the Scuffette) is the slipper for people with permanently cold feet. It's worn without socks.
Good for: anyone who always feels the cold.
Note: sheepskin gives over time – buy snug.
6. Haflinger Flair Soft – the affordable felt gift
A light felted-wool mule with no frills, available in lots of colours. Ideal as a small gift, for Secret Santa or for guests.
Good for: Secret Santa, guest slippers, a smaller budget.
Note: less footbed than the Zermatt or Grizzly.

Getting the size right without asking
- Check their existing shoes: the size is usually on the tongue or insole.
- Between sizes? Go up: a little room is nicer than tight slippers – except sheepskin, which gives.
- Dual sizes (e.g. 6/7) forgive small mistakes.
- Our size chart helps convert between UK, EU and US.
When is it cheapest?
Slippers are often discounted around Black Friday – prices tend to rise closer to Christmas. More in our Black Friday guide. And set up a price alert so we can email you when shoes in your size get genuinely cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
Which slippers are the warmest?
Of these six, the sheepskin UGG Scuff and the closed felted-wool glerups shoe. An open mule is always a little cooler than a closed shoe.
Can you wash felted-wool slippers?
Usually not in the machine – felt can shrink. Brands generally recommend brushing them and treating marks gently by hand. Check the care instructions for each model.
What if the size is wrong?
Amazon usually lets you return or exchange within the return window, and it's often extended over Christmas. Check the exact terms on the product page.
Why don't you show Amazon prices and photos?
Amazon only allows prices and product images through an interface we don't use yet. So we link straight to the product pages, where you'll see current prices, sizes and photos.
