Best women's winter boots: warm, waterproof and grippy

Nesim Yılmaz · 21.10.2026

A good women's winter boot has three jobs: keep you warm, keep you dry and stop you slipping. Plenty of fashion boots manage only one. Here are five models people have bought for years because they work in a real winter – from snow days to a wet, slushy British January.

As always: we haven't lab-tested these boots. Our picks are based on manufacturer information, materials and construction, and the criteria in our winter boots guide. Brand temperature ratings are rough guides for when you're moving.

1. Sorel Joan of Arctic – the women's snow-boot classic

Think of the Joan of Arctic as the Caribou's slimmer sister: a waterproof rubber shell below, leather or suede above, a removable felt liner inside and often a faux-fur cuff. The shaft sits closer to the leg, so it works better under trousers and looks less bulky.

Good for: proper snow days, long walks, cold mornings at the bus stop.
Note: heavier than a town boot; the cuff doesn't love constant rain.
Sizing: True to slightly large – with thick socks your usual size usually fits.

2. Sorel Caribou – for properly cold days

The Caribou is the workhorse of snow boots: wide shaft, thick sole and plenty of room for warm socks. If you stand around outside in winter – with kids, a dog or on a ski trip – little is warmer.

Good for: deep snow and serious cold.
Note: heavy and bulky; often overkill for town.
Sizing: Tends to run large.

3. Columbia Bugaboot – light with good grip

The Bugaboot is the sporty choice: much lighter than the Sorels, with a reflective thermal lining and a lugged sole that grips well. Ideal if you walk a lot in winter.

Good for: snowy walks, sledging, country lanes.
Note: not as warm as a Caribou when standing still in deep cold.
Sizing: True to size.

4. Timberland 6-Inch Premium – for a wet town winter

Not a snow boot but a waterproof leather boot with light insulation. For a typical UK winter of rain, slush and temperatures around freezing it's often the more practical choice – and it works with jeans as well as a winter coat.

Good for: town, commuting, wet pavements.
Note: stiff for the first few weeks; not warm enough for a hard freeze.
Sizing: Runs large; many go half a size down.

5. UGG Classic Mini – comfort for dry cold

Sheepskin inside, suede outside: very warm and comfortable as long as it stays dry. It isn't made for slush and road salt – but it's the cosiest boot on this list.

Good for: dry, cold days and short trips.
Note: not waterproof, little grip on ice.
Sizing: Worn without socks; buy snug, the sheepskin gives.

What to look for in a women's winter boot

When are women's winter boots cheapest?

The biggest discounts usually arrive from late January – but popular sizes are often gone by then. Around Black Friday there's still plenty of choice. Set up a price alert and we'll email you when a winter boot in your size gets genuinely cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

Which women's winter boot is the warmest?

Of these five, the Sorel Caribou and Joan of Arctic are the warmest, thanks to their rubber shells, thick soles and felt liners.

Which winter boots are waterproof but still stylish?

The Sorel Joan of Arctic combines a rubber shell with a slimmer shaft. For town, a waterproof leather boot like the Timberland 6-Inch is a good alternative.

Are UGG boots good in snow?

Only up to a point. They're very warm, but suede isn't waterproof and the sole has little grip.

Should I buy winter boots a size up?

Not automatically. Allow room for thicker socks and try them on in the evening. Some models run large anyway – see the sizing notes above.

Why don't you show Amazon prices and photos?

Amazon only allows prices and product images through an interface we don't use yet. So we link straight to the product pages, where you'll see current prices, sizes and photos.
