How to clean trainers and make them last longer
Nesim Yılmaz · 19.10.2026
A shoe bought on sale is only a bargain if it lasts. Ten minutes of care a month makes a real difference.
The basics
- Take out the laces and insoles.
- Brush off loose dirt while it's dry.
- Use lukewarm water with a little mild washing-up liquid, never hot water.
- Stuff with newspaper and dry at room temperature – not on a radiator or in direct sun.
By material
| Material | How to | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth leather | damp cloth, then leather conditioner | washing machine |
| Suede / nubuck | suede brush and eraser, protector spray | lots of water |
| Mesh / knit | soft brush with soapy water | bleach |
| White rubber sole | melamine sponge or bicarbonate paste | harsh cleaners on the upper |
Washing machine?
Many brands advise against it, as glue and cushioning can suffer. If you must, only fabric trainers, in a laundry bag, on a 30°C delicate cycle with no spin.
Prevention
Spray new shoes with a protector before the first wear, and rotate pairs so each one dries out completely between wears.
