Shoes for wide feet: understanding widths and finding the right fit
Nesim Yılmaz · 19.10.2026
If a shoe pinches at the sides, it isn't too small – it's too narrow. Going up a size rarely helps; the shoe just becomes too long.
Measure your foot width
- Stand with your weight on a sheet of paper.
- Mark the widest points of the forefoot, inside and outside.
- Measure the distance and compare it with the brand's width chart – many brands list foot width per size.
Width labels
| Label | Meaning |
|---|---|
| D (men), B (women) | standard width (US system) |
| E / 2E / Wide | wide |
| 4E / Extra Wide | extra wide |
| UK letter fittings (E, F, G, H) | used by some UK brands such as Clarks; later letters are wider |
Good to know
- Several running brands offer popular models in "Wide". Hoka, Asics, Brooks and New Balance have many 2E options.
- Some hiking boots come on wide lasts, for example from Lowa and Meindl.
- Shoes with a roomy toe box can fit well even without a width label.
Trying on
Try shoes in the evening, when your feet are at their widest. The ball of your foot should sit at the widest part of the shoe without the upper stretching tight.
