Sandals buying guide: footbeds, straps and soles for summer
Nesim Yılmaz · 19.10.2026
On holiday many people wear sandals for hours every day. A cheap, flat pair soon leaves you with tired feet.
The three main types
| Type | Best for | Look for |
|---|---|---|
| Walking sandal | hiking, travel, long walks | adjustable straps, grippy sole, heel strap |
| Footbed slider | town, everyday, holidays | contoured footbed, right width |
| Flip-flop | beach, pool, short trips | soft toe post, non-slip sole |
Footbed
A cork or moulded footbed supports your arch and spreads the pressure. It takes a few days to break in. Very flat sandals tire your feet faster on long walks.
Straps
At least three adjustment points (forefoot, instep, heel) stop your foot sliding. Soft lining prevents rubbing, especially when your feet are wet.
Size
Your toes shouldn't hang over the edge; leave about half a centimetre at the front and back.
When to buy
The best prices arrive with the summer sales from late June. To be sure of your size, buy in May or June at the first price drop.
